12inch log comparison to floor joist

Wood vs engineered lumber. Which one to choose? | Pro BuilderIn addition to the common nominal 10 and 12 inch depths, engineered I-joists are made in depths beyond that of traditional framing lumber. Depths up to 48 inches and lengths limited only by ground transportation and handling are available to builders. An advantage over lumber is that a deeper I-joist member is only incrementally more expensive ...

I Joist selection for large span - Fine HomebuildingI did a room above it a few years back with 14 inch I joists , I thought it was okay. Two summers ago I did one same span for my buddy, they speced 16 inchers and it was better. I think the 12 inchers are two small and when you go 12 inch centres it is a pain to run pipes or wires in those smaller cavities. Have a good day. Cliffy

Floor Joist Span Tables—CalculatorThe floor joist spacing is the distance between the centers of any two installed joists. See the image below for an example of joists spaced 16" on center (16" o.c.). Since the example house we are designing for is 12 feet wide, we need to find, in the floor joist span table, a joist size and centering that can span 12' or wider.

Understanding Floor Joist Spans - The SpruceTrue floor joist span calculations can only be made by a structural engineer or contractor. This sample table gives minimum floor joist sizes for joists spaced at 16 inches and 24 inches on-center (o.c.) for 2-grade lumber with 10 pounds per square foot of dead load and 40 pounds of live load, which is typical of normal residential construction:

Span Tables - Calculate Joist, Rafter and Wood Beam SpansThe lengths and sizes of joists vary depending on the species and quality of the lumber used. For example, you can span a #1 grade (no knots) southern yellow pine a greater distance than a #2 grade (with knots) southern yellow pine. The #1 grade material is more expensive than the #2 grade, but if you can use fewer or smaller #1 grade joists or ...

Wood vs. steel I-beams: Is one better than the other ...Q. I’m getting ready to build a large room addition that needs a beam to support the floor joists. I’ve been told that a wood beam will work, but I’ve always seen steel I-beams in other houses.

Maximum Floor Joist Span - Engineering ToolBoxMaximum floor joist span for No. 1 and No. 2 Grade of Douglas fir are indicated below. Max. dead load (weight of structure and fixed loads) 10 lbs/ft 2. Floor joists are available in several depths and lengths that are sufficient for most residential and commercial building plans. I-joists can be custom-made for plans that require unusual sizes.

Floor Joists: Solid Lumber, TJI’s, LVL and Open Web Floor ...The second floor of this house is built with 2 x 10 wood I-joists (joists that resemble steel I-beams and are 9.5 inches thick), 16″ on center and spanning 13.5 feet. These joists are stronger than comparable solid wood joists, provide a 66% larger nailing surface for the plywood subfloor (2.5 inches instead of 1.5 inches) and are more ...

TJI floor joists vs. conventional 2x12 lumberI actually already had the span table, which I got from the TJI Floor Joist brochure. What I wanted to do was compare these numbers/spans to that of ordinary 2x12 lumber. You are correct; the first floor will be mostly tile, so a good sturdy floor is mandatory. The second floor will be hardwood, with the exception of the bathrooms.

Strength of 2x6" - 24" Center vs 2x6" - 16" center ...One of the more relevant details is subfloor and floor joists, actually. You want walls to line up with floor joists and roof trusses. 24" OC removes the option of going with the cheapest thinnest floor sheathing (you get deflection between joists), and increases the deflection of the joists themselves, all other things being equal.

Insulating 12 in centered floor joists : HomeImprovementSo when I insulated my kitchen from the bathroom above (for sound proofing primarily) I put it at the bottom of the joists. I did this because I wanted the water supply lines behind or in the insulation so less sound would travel through them.

Joist Vs. Truss | HunkerJoists are popular in home construction because they are versatile, cost-efficient, and often easy for contractors to work with. For example, engineered wood joists are typically large enough and strong enough that many holes can be drilled in them in order to run electrical wires and plumbing pipes through without endangering the structural integrity of the floor or ceiling.
